Can I use my GoSilent Cube without a LAN hotspot being broadcasted?
Yes, you will need to use the Ethernet/Wi-Fi configuration (LAN: Ethernet WAN: Wi-Fi) to complete this process you will have to use only 1 Wi-Fi adapter instead of 2. When using the GoSilent Cube in this configuration you will have a WAN Wi-Fi connection however you will have to connect your GoSilent Cube LAN connection to your PC/Mac via ethernet. The ethernet port on the GoSilent Cube is labeled as “Device”.
Can I connect to a captive portal?
Yes, the GoSilent Cube can connect to captive portals. When connecting to a captive portal, the GoSilent Cube’s admin console will prompt the user to complete the captive portal’s sign-in process in a pop-up window.
How is the captive portal web page displayed?
Once the user has selected a network, the GoSilent Cube’s admin console will redirect to the captive portal webpage. The user will follow the captive portal’s instructions to connect to the network. Once successfully connected, the user will use the button at the top of the screen to go back to the GoSilent Cube’s admin console.
All interactions with the captive portal are kept on the GoSilent Cube. The user’s laptop and the captive portal do not directly interact with each other during the activation of the captive portal. An emulator displays the captive portal on the user’s laptop in order for the user to complete the activation process.
Does the GoSilent Server (GSS) support network address translation (NAT) for VPN traffic?
The GoSilent Server (GSS) performs a NAT of the GoSilent Cube's IP addresses to the LAN side of the GSS. The GSS also performs a reverse NAT on the returned traffic, which is how the return traffic is properly routed.

Why do I receive a warning or exception in my browser when navigating to the https://setup.gosilent console?
The setup.gosilent console is attaching to a web server that runs directly on the GSC device. By default, the GSC device is shipped with certificates that are generated by the Attila certificate authority (CA). If you receive a warning when browsing to the setup.gosilent console, then your browser does not recognize the Attila CA.
If you would prefer not to be warned each time that you navigate to the console, then you can configure your browser to identify the setup.gosilent console as a trusted site. Alternatively, you can import the Attila CA root certificate. Moreover, in version 19.02 of the product, you may upload your own trusted server certificate for the setup.gosilent console, which is issued by the CA of your choice.
Why does the https://setup.gosilent console display as “Not Secure” in the browser?
Refer to the question above, entitled “Why do I receive a warning or exception in my browser when navigating to the https://setup.gosilent console?”. When you choose to continue to the console after the browser warning, then the URL will display as “Not Secure.” If you do not want to see the “Not Secure” warning, then you can configure your browser to identify the https://setup.gosilent console as a trusted site.

Updating Software:
How do I know when updates are available for my GoSilent Cube?
To check for available updates, click the bell icon in the top right-hand corner of the GoSilent Admin Console page and click “🔄 Check For Updates”.
How do I upgrade the software on my GoSilent Cube?
- Upgrading is normally performed in a two-step process. You must first download the update and then install the update. You will be prompted after you have completed the initial download to perform the update. Be sure to complete both steps to fully complete the upgrade process.
- Please ensure you have enough time to update the GoSilent Cube about 30-35 minutes.
- Disconnecting from any VPN connection before starting the OTA update process is recommended to significantly reduce download time.
- Do not remove power from the GoSilent Cube or navigate away from the GoSilent Admin Console before the update is complete.
If you have version 18.09.0.019 or newer:
- Click the bell icon in the top right of the page
- Click "Check For Updates"
- Verify "Checking..." appears in the pop-up window
- Click the "Download" button

- Click "Download and Update" button
- DO NOT REMOVE POWER FROM THE GOSILENT CUBE OR NAVIGATE AWAY FROM GOSILENT CONSOLE IN YOUR BROWSER
Why should I disconnect from the VPN for the OTA update? What are the safety precautions?
Disconnecting from the VPN significantly reduces the download times for the GoSilent Cube to download the new software update. The download time would be reduced by 3 three times. The update software is digitally signed on the OTA server and the signature is checked before installation to ensure the update has not been tampered with or corrupted during the download.
Operating:
Why do I need to shut down the device, as opposed to pulling the power supply?
When the power supply is removed suddenly, the GoSilent Cube is unable to run the proper shutdown protocol to prepare the device to gracefully shutdown. This can cause files to be corrupt, thus potentially bricking your GoSilent Cube.
Can I plug/unplug the wireless USB adapters while the GoSilent Cube is running?
No, the GoSilent Cube does not support changes in connection configuration while the device is running. When removing or replacing the USB adapters the device should be shut down and then restarted.
Can I plug/unplug the Ethernet cable from the RJ45 outlet while the GoSilent Cube is running?
Yes. For example, the user could disconnect the ethernet cable between the laptop and GoSilent Cube and reconnect the ethernet without having to perform a restart.
Which DNS services are used for hostname resolution on the Cube and clients (e.g., laptop, tablet) that are connected to the Cube?
There are several answers to this question, which depend upon whether the GoSilent Cube has successfully established an IPSec tunnel or not. Prior to elaborating on those scenarios, one should remember that the Cube will only allow traffic to pass through when an IPSec tunnel is active. If a laptop is connected to the Cube and the IPSec tunnel is down, then the laptop will not be allowed to pass Internet traffic through the Cube. This is by design. Now, let’s elaborate on the scenarios.
1.) When the IPSec tunnel is down, which DNS services will be used by the Cube?
The Cube will use the DNS services that are obtained through the WAN connection. If you have configured your WAN connection through WiFi or via Ethernet/DHCP, then the Cube will obtain the DNS services provided by DHCP. If you have configured your WAN connection via Ethernet and a static IP, then you may manually configure one or more DNS servers within the Ethernet configuration panel.
2.) When the IPSec tunnel is up, which DNS services will be used by the Cube?
During the establishment of the IPSec tunnel, the GoSilent Cube retrieves a prioritized DNS server list from the GoSilent Server (GSS). Out of the box, the GSS is configured to point to Quad9 as an external DNS provider. If you would prefer to use a different DNS service (including your own private, on-premise DNS), then your server administrator may change that in your GSS Web-based console under the network tab.
3.) What DNS service is used by clients that are connected to the Cube?
Clients (laptops, tablets, phones, etc) that are connected to the GoSilent Cube will be given the IP address of the Cube as their DNS server. The Cube will handle the forwarding of the DNS requests based upon its prioritized list of DNS servers. (Refer to questions #4 and #5 for more info on the prioritized list of DNS servers.)
4.) When the IPSec tunnel is up, which DNS services will the Cube use to forward requests?
When the IPSec tunnel is up, the Cube forwards requests to the prioritized DNS service list that is defined on the GSS. (Refer to sub-question #2 above.)
5.) When the IPSec tunnel is down, which DNS services will the Cube use to forward requests?
When the IPSec tunnel is down, the Cube forwards to the Quad9 (9.9.9.9) DNS service to resolve hostname queries. This has no real functional impact as the Cube does not allow traffic to flow through without an IPSec tunnel being established anyway. We have considered supplying clients with the same DNS list that the Cube obtains through DHCP, but either way there is no functional impact, since traffic may not flow through the Cube.
6.) When the Cube is connected to Attila’s Global service, which DNS service will be used?
Attila’s Global service is provided for executive travelers that are seeking privacy of their Internet connections and obfuscation of their endpoints. Attila has configured the Global servers to use the Quad9 DNS service, since a primary objective of the Global service is Internet connectivity. If you intend to deploy our on-premise GSS server into your own private network (or cloud), as opposed to using our Global service, then you may configure the DNS services your company would like to use. (Refer to sub-question #2 above.)
7.) What is Quad9?
Quad9 (9.9.9.9) is a free, recursive, anycast DNS platform that was developed in conjunction with IBM and does not collect any personally-identifiable (PII) information. (If you are not familiar with Quad9, then you can learn more via their website: https://www.quad9.net/ and the service runs on 9.9.9.9)
